PORTSMOUTH -- Police have arrested a man in connection with the death of a woman found dead inside a home on Broad Street.

The victim, 43-year-old Anita Kay Tevis, was discovered unresponsive early Saturday morning in the 500 block of Broad Street.

Earlier that morning the suspect, Gene Williams, reportedly called police to report he had been injured in a fight.

Officers spoke to the suspect and determined that Williams, Tevis and another male were at the home on Broad Street earlier in the evening.

According to a press release, the victim and Williams were involved in an argument that progressed into a physical fight.

Around 5:15 a.m. police dispatchers got a call about a unconscious woman in the area.

Anita Tevis was located inside a home and pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say she suffered trauma to her body. Her body was transported to the Norfolk Medical Examiners Office.

An autopsy will be performed to determined the cause of death.

Gene Williams is charged with first degree murder and robbery.
