PORTSMOUTH--A registered sex offender has been arrested and charged with a number of sex crimes in Portsmouth.

On Friday shortly after 8:30 A.M., a 44 year-old woman reported to the Portsmouth Police Special Victims Unit that she had been held against her will, and assaulted.  The incident took place in the early morning hours in the 10 block of Columbia Court.

The suspect, who is an acquaintance of victim, called the victim and requested she come to his home and pick up an item.  When the victim got to the home, the suspect lured the victim into a bathroom.  The suspect used zip ties to bind the victim’s arms and legs.  The suspect then threatened to kill the victim in various ways, while he assaulted her.  She was able to free herself after the assault and drive to Maryview Hospital for treatment.  Hospital staff then notified the police.

Later on Friday at approximately 5 p.m., officers saw the suspect in the area of Columbia Court driving a white pick-up truck.  The suspect was immediately taken into custody, during a traffic stop.  A search warrant was obtained and executed on the suspect’s home.

James Warren Key, Jr., 59, of the 10 block of Columbia Court, Portsmouth was arrested and charged with rape, abduction, attempt to kill, malicious wounding and damaging property related to the above incident.  He is currently in the custody of the Portsmouth Sheriff’s Office.

During the investigation of the incident, evidence was discovered which linked the Key to another incident involving an eleven year-old girl.  On April 7th, while the suspect was babysitting the victim at the suspect’s home, he alegedly assaulted her.  The mother of the victim was not aware he was a registered sex offender until after the incident.  Key has also been charged with abduction and aggravated sexual battery related to the incident involving the 11 year-old.
