PORTSMOUTH -- A Portsmouth teacher was surprised Wednesday when she was announced as the winner of the annual Milken Educator Award.
Lakeishia Ames, a teacher at Churchland Primary and Intermediate School, was in tears as she accepted the $25,000 check.
"I'm just excited and I'm happy and I'm glad and I'm just gonna keep doing what I do every day for the students and for education and just thank you, thank you, thank you," said Ames of he award.
The Department of Education appoints an independent committee to decide who will et the prestigious award.
Only about five other educators from Hampton Roads have won the award since 1987.
