PORTSMOUTH -- A large crowd watched as police began their investigation into the shooting death of person in the 1200 block of Portsmouth Boulevard Tuesday.
Officers got the call just before 5:00 p.m. When they arrived, they found the person in the back yard of home, close to its border with Hoover Street.
Wednesday afternoon, police reported the victim is 27-year old Barry Timberlake of Portsmouth. He died from a gunshot wound to his upper body.
"Initially, your heart stops, and you're like, you hope it's nobody that you know or that is near you or anything like that," said Brandi Diaz.
The wife and mother was on her way home from work when she came upon the crime scene.
"I've lived here for about five years. We just bought a house like five years ago, and this is not good. You don't want to see anything like this on your block or in your neighborhood," Diaz told 13News. "I have a child that's 11 years old and he walks home from the bus, and I would hate to get a phone call that something like this has happened."
"It's been a lot of youth violence out here. I see a lot of break-ins," noted Tinya Prayer. "The children, you know, they just out here killing one another."
Prayer, who also moved to Brighton about five years ago, is a mother like Diaz.
"Whoever did it, do they have any concerns for the children? You know, I can't explain it to the children, but say you can't go outside and play, you know, due to the violence out here. It can happen to you."
Currently, there is no information on suspects or motive. Police are still investigating.
Police are asking anyone who knows anything about the shooting to call Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
