PORTSMOUTH(AP) -- Portsmouth officials plan to convert an abandoned railway into a trail for pedestrians and bicyclists.

City Council voted last week to seek state funding for a 1.8-mile trail. The city would have to provide 20 percent of the project's estimated $1 million cost.

Portsmouth transportation manager Susan Wilson tells The Virginian-Pilot that residents could use the trail for transportation as well as recreation. It will run near at least five schools and lead to areas with grocery stores and restaurants.

The abandoned railway is owned by the Virginia Port Authority.
