PORTSMOUTH--A Portsmouth police officer and his wife have been charged with animal cruelty after a former police horse in their care allegedly starved to death.

Brian Davis, 34, and Jennifer Davis, 33, have both been charged with cruelty to animals and inadequate care of animals.

According to Portsmouth Police spokeswoman Jan Clark, the horse named "Amy" was a 14-year veteran of the Portsmouth Police mounted patrol before her retirement in 2009.  The Davis family adopted her and took her to their Suffolk home.

In March of 2013, another family, Debra and David Kelly, began caring for Amy.

According to Clark, a veterinarian examined Amy and said her condition was the result of “long term starvation in the hands of the previous owner.”

Two weeks after the Kelly family took her in, Amy had to be euthanized.

Davis was assigned to the K-9 Unit and is currently in an administrative assignment, Clark said.
