PORTSMOUTH-- Firefighters are investigating a form of oil that was seen floating on Lake Collins.

Units were called to the lake Friday evening around 7:30 p.m. Someone has spotted oil floating on the lake around 5 p.m. but had waited to call the fire department.  When firefighters arrived, most of the oil had dissipated.

Tests were conducted and the oil was determined not to be hazardous.

Chief Jim Hoffler told WVEC.com that it is believed the oil was organically based like vegetable cooking oil.  He said it was not certain if the oil was dumped there or came from a storm drain.

Hoffler said the fire marshalls were going to follow up with an investigation because,  if the oil was dumped there,  it could lead to charges of illegal dumping.

The lake was the scene a spill of 50 gallons of diesel fuel last July.
