PORTSMOUTH -- Despite losing electricity for much of the day, classes and lunch went on as scheduled at Simonsdale Elementary School in Portsmouth.

Maureen Mizelle, a spokeswoman for Portsmouth schools, said that Simonsdale has been dealing with power outages since late morning. She blamed the problem on a bad fuse.

Mizelle said the school receives a lot of natural light inside classrooms and hallways due to large windows and skylights, and that emergency lighting was operating in restrooms.

She said the school provided sandwiches for lunch and used sterno burners to keep other food hot.

According to Mizelle, Dominion Virginia Power and the school operations staff have been working on the power situation and expect to have electricity restored to the building today.
