PORTSMOUTH - Police say a man left his two-month-old baby in the woods after getting into an argument with the child's mother.

Police charged 22-year-old Ayrton Trannie Wright following the investigation early Monday.

Investigators say Wright assaulted the woman around 1:00 a.m. on Corprew Avenue and ran into the woods on Turnpike Road. Police ran after him and took him into custody. Meantime, the child's mother said her little boy was missing from the house, so authorities went back into the woods and found the child on the ground near a tree. He was returned to his mother, unharmed.

The woman was treated for abrasions and contusions to her head and face.

Wright was charged with assault and battery and abuse and neglect.
