Homeowner catches burglary suspects
PORTSMOUTH - Police say a Portsmouth man held a 15-year-old burglary suspect at gunpoint until officers arrived.
The 64-year-old homeowner found the boy hiding behind the TV in his Belle Street house Wednesday night, according to investigators.
According to police, two boys rang the doorbell, but the man didn't answer. Instead, he went into the back yard, where he found the shed door open and an open window in the kitchen. So, he went back in and that's when he spotted the teen.
"The victim fired his gun several times; however, no bullets struck the suspect," said Det. Jan Clark. "The suspect was ordered to lie on the floor, which he did."
The second youngster got out through the bedroom window.
The homeowner called police and he gave officers his gun when they arrived.
The 15-year-old has been charged with burglary; the search continues for the second suspect. Both live in Portsmouth, Clark stated, adding there's no indication they knew the man.
Police say the homeowner is not facing charges.
