NORFOLK -- Construction for the new Midtown Tunnel will start in October, and the construction company is optimistic that they can finish the job on time, or even a little sooner.
Norfolk City Council was briefed on the timeline Tuesday night.
Construction Director Dallas Marlow says that the massive project to add a parallel tube to the existing Midtown Tunnel, is expected to be complete by September of 2016.
"That's about 3 to 4 months ahead of schedule," he said.
Elizabeth River Crossings took control of tunnel operations in July.
In addition to the new tube, the existing Midtown and Downtown tunnels will be renovated, and the Martin Luther King Freeway will be extended to connect with I-264.
Councilman Paul Riddick expressed some concern about a pending lawsuit to try and stop tolls that are scheduled to start in 2014.
"Suppose the lawsuit prevails, what happens then?," he said.
Despite the legal battle, construction is moving forward.
