PORTSMOUTH -- A worker was injured after he became trapped in a pile of debris at Titan America in Portsmouth Monday morning, officials said.

Portsmouth Fire spokesman Richard Hudak said an employee in an excavator was digging in the 100 block of Chataqua Avenue when a pile of debris fell on top of him.

"He was operating a front end loader attempting to get a load of rock from a larger pile, when his front loader went too far into the pile," according to spokeswoman Det. Misty Holley.  "This caused the rock to fall back onto the cab of the front end loader, breaking the glass and filling up the cab where the victim was."

A nearby fire and rescue crew responded and dug the man out of the pile with the help of another nearby excavator.

The man suffered a bad laceration to the arm and was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
