PORTSMOUTH -- A family of 5 is out of its home for the time being after a fire started in the house on Highland Avenue Saturday afternoon.

"The guy that was in the house -- or who lived at the house -- actually came over here, and got onto his knees, and started crying, and it was very sad, very emotional," said neighbor Michael Townsend. "It was coming from the back and then it basically got bigger, and bigger, and bigger, and took over the whole house."

"That's where the kitchen is, and it was shooting straight up," Yvonne Holley noted.

The American Red Cross is helping the family with food, clothing, and a place to stay.

The Red Cross also assisted people affected by fires on Burton Street in Hampton and Greystone Trace in Newport News Saturday.
