PORTSMOUTH - A Portsmouth woman is charged with animal cruelty after police found her two dogs in a cage attacking each other.

Animal control officers went to the home on Peach Street on Saturday morning and saw the pit bull dogs inside a shed in the back yard.

Both dogs had serious visible injuries, said police, and officers couldn't separate them and they were aggressive towards them. So a responding police officer fired two rounds from a shot gun, killing them.

The owner, a 25-year-old, was issued a summons for cruelty to animals and inadequate care.
