PORTSMOUTH-A business owner was able to stop a man who'd just robbed his store.

It happened around 5:10 p.m. Wednesday at the Family Thrift Store on Twin Pines Road.

According to police, 33-year-old Vernon Lee Cherry III went into the store, asked for change and then grabbed the cash register drawer. They say he pointed something he had under his shirt at an employee, then grabbed cash and ran out.  But he didn't get far. The business owner caught him and held him until police arrived.

Cherry, who lives on River Cove in Portsmouth, is charged with robbery and possession of a controlled substance.
