PORTSMOUTH--An alert homeowner helped police capture a burgler Tuesday afternoon.
Around 4:30 p.m., police received a 911 call related to a burglary in progress. A male suspect was seen entering a home in the 5100 block of Greenwood Drive. The owners of the home were away, and neighbors were watching the house.
A neighbor confronted the suspect and attempted to block him from leaving until police arrived. As officers approached the scene, the suspect ran. The officers pursued the suspect and he was taken into custody.
Dishan Gainey, 24, of the 6200 block of Centenary Drive in Portsmouth has been charged with burglary, and grand larceny. He is currently in the custody of the Portsmouth Sheriff’s Office.
Gainey's car, a Chevrolet Caprice, was parked in front of the victim’s home. It was not registered, but did display a license plate from another vehicle. The car contained items from the victims’ home which were later returned to the victim. Police say Gainey entered the home through an unlocked side door.
