NORFOLK -- On Friday and Saturday, volunteers will turn vacant storefronts on one Norfolk street into eateries, retail and entertainment venues.

The Better Block initiative hopes to boost new life into the neighborhood at  35th Street and Newport Avenue.

The program was successful last year when the City transformed the arts district along Granby Street.

"We definitely gained a lot from Better Block," said Charles Burnell, owner of Alchemy Norfolk.

"Because of the new interest, we were able to lease this building and house artists creating a wide-range of projects," Burnell said.

The Beauty Parlor by Q and Company also benefited by last year's Better Block.

"It definitely raised awareness about our operation.  In fact, I am expanding to next door," said owner Quincy Brown.

Better Block on 35th Street runs Friday from  5 p.m. until  9 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.
