CHESTERFIELD (AP) -- A Virginia State University student from Norfolk is in custody and a second student is being sought by police in Tuesday's fatal shooting of a Petersburg man and wounding of another student, The Richmond Times Dispatch reports.

Police say there was a confrontation between groups of young men in a parking lot near campus that stemmed from an earlier dispute.

Artarrius Jamar Stepter of Norfolk has been charged with brandishing a firearm during the 4:20 p.m. clash that ended with the death of 20-year-old Tyrail W. Hughes.

The Richmond paper says police have obtained warrants for Ryan Christopher Simms, 19, on charges of murder, felonious assault and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

University spokesman Thomas Reed says an 18-year-old VSU student was treated for a gunshot to the ankle Tuesday afternoon.

VSU sent out school-wide alerts about the shooting but didn't lock down the campus.
