NORFOLK--Two women have been charged in connection with the death of a baby last month, according to court records.
An affidavit says 20-year-old Jessica Renee Carpenter was 25 weeks pregnant when she went to Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center in labor. She gave birth to a baby boy, who died about 20 minutes after he was born.
Carpenter is charged with trying to induce an abortion and conspiracy to commit a felony.
Carpenter's friend, 27-year-old Rachael Anne Lowe, is accused of helping her and was also charged with trying to induce an abortion and conspiracy to commit a felony.
According to an affidavit, police interviewed three friends who said the women wanted to end Carpenter's pregnancy and that they heard them talking about buying items from GNC she could ingest to do it.
Records show that Carpenter was unemployed and Lowe previously worked at the Tidewater Women's Health Clinic in Norfolk.
"The witnesses also stated that they were privy to the conversation in which Lowe and Carpenter conspired to break into Tidewater Women's Health Clinic to procure instruments known to induce labor," the affidavit said.
Both women have been released on bond. They will have a hearing in Juvenile and Domestic Court on June 20.
Under Virginia law, second-trimester abortions are allowed only if a licensed physician performs or assists in the procedure in "a hospital licensed by the State Department of Health or operated by the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services."
