NORFOLK--A truck ramp at the Midtown Tunnel was still closed Tuesday night as a contractor hired by Elizabeth River Tunnels continues to test an embankment.

SKW Contractors has been monitoring the pre-existing conditions of the roadway and embankment since October, 2012.

According to Ellizabeth River Tunnels spokesperson Leila Rice,  the ramp was closed Monday night when a 3 foot by 3 foot depression was visually seen on the embankment.  Soil borings will be taken on Wednesday, weather permitting.  Analysis of the borings will follow.

SKW anticipates identifying a solution to the embankment depression by the end of the week.  Until then, the ramp will be closed and a detour through a Ghent neighborhood will be in place.

The detour utilizes Redgate and Claremont avenues and the city of Norfolk has lifted truck restrictions to the streets permitting  heavy vehicles to use the route.
