NORFOLK (AP) -- A recent murder case resurrected a recurring problem plaguing the Norfolk Police Department: shoddy audio equipment.
During the trial of Hassan Harvey a police recording of Harvey was so bad that a transcript was laced with the word "inaudible" at key points.
Despite the problems, Harvey was convicted of killing a tool salesman from Virginia Beach.
During the weeklong trial in November, detectives struggled at times in court to explain exactly what Harvey had said during the March interview. A Circuit Court judge complained to a city detective.
Norfolk police officials say they're trying to fix the problem, but court records show that the department has had problems recording interviews for years.
