NORFOLK -- It's a good way to teach your kids that little in life is free. A day off now, means a day on later.
The extra snow days most districts built into the calendar in anticipation of inclement weather have been used because of last week's snow. So, with students missing more days this week, administrators have to figure out back-up plans.
Superintendents can use their discretion scheduling makeup days, but districts told 13News Now some possibilities they are considering.
Norfolk Public Schools will extend the early release day planned for Feb. 14 into a full instructional day. Staff development that had been planned for the afternoon of Feb. 14 will be reconfigured. Presidents’ Day, Feb. 17, will now be a full school day for students and staff, rather than a holiday.
These two scheduling adjustments will be more than sufficient to allow NPS to meet the state requirement for 990 hours of direct instructional time each school year.
In Virginia Beach, schools will be in session on Feb. 15, March 29 and April 26 -each is a Saturday. For secondary students, Feb. 15 will be an A day; March 29 will be a B day; and April 26 will be an A day.
In Suffolk, the School Board approved the following makeup day changes to the 2013-14 calendar:
- Friday, Feb. 7 – Changed to a full day for students & staff; Parent-Teacher Conferences can be scheduled on an individual basis as needed
- Monday, Feb. 17 (Presidents’ Day) – Full day for students & staff
- Tuesday, March 4 – Full day for students & staff; Professional Development Day cancelled
- Monday, May 26 (Memorial Day) – Full day for students & staff
The first two days missed are covered by extra instructional hours and will not be made up.
Make-up days for any future days missed will be determined by the School Board at that time.
REMINDER: Monday, Feb. 3 will be an early dismissal day for all students. Mid-term exams will be given to complete the exam requirement, and teachers will have the afternoon to complete grades and finish report cards.
Chesapeake: Monday, March 31, which was previously designated as a teacher workday.
Newport News says because of missed school time, President’s Day, which falls on February 17, will be a regular school day for all students and staff.
Isle of Wight:
•February 19: Full day for elementary schools (previously early dismissal )
•March 10 -14: Elementary schools will add 5 minutes at the end of each day for a dismissal time of 3:55 pm
•April 2: Full day for all students (No exams or early dismissal)
•April 3: Full day for all students (Exams begin/No early dismissal)
•April 4: Exam Day - 90 minute early dismissal for all students .
York County officials say the division will typically identify student holidays and/or teacher workdays as makeup days.
Currituck County Schools scheduled the following days for make up: February 24, March 28, and June 12 make up (early release).
JPK Early College: February 24, March 14 and May 27.
They are now calculating instructional hours to determine if they can meet the requirements outlined in the NC School Calendar Law without rescheduling student days missed last week (1/29, 1/30, 1/31).
Hampton will make up their snow days on February 17 and April 21.
Portsmouth says the snow make-up day for all students and employees is February 17.
