NORFOLK -- Starting today, you'll have to press the button to open the doors on The Tide.

Until now, the doors opened automatically, regardless of how many people are on board.  That let out heat in the winter and cool air in the summer, Hampton Roads Transit officials said. They also say the constant opening and closing adds to the wear and tear.

HRT stresses automatic openings will be put in place when crowds are big, like the upcoming Grand Illumination on November 17.
