NORFOLK (AP) -- The Port of Virginia has started receiving cargo diverted from the Port of New York and New Jersey because of Superstorm Sandy.
More than 1,000 containers and 1,300 vehicles were offloaded in Virginia on Thursday.
The Port of Virginia says as many as 3,000 additional containers will be offloaded in the next several days.
The U.S. Coast Guard opened the Port of New York and New Jersey on Thursday on a restricted basis to get gasoline and fuel to the areas hit hardest.
The Coast Guard says its top priority is to get the port of New York and New Jersey back to full operations.
