11/21 UPDATE: Pile driving will begin Friday and continue into next year.

NORFOLK-Some folks near the Midtown Tunnel may hear some loud noises as piling driving begins.

The Elizabeth River Tunnels Project says this work is for the Norfolk approach to the new Midtown.

The pre-cast concrete piles, ranging between 18" to 24" square and up to 85 feet in length, will serve as a vital foundation component of the new approach.

Officials stress the work shouldn't exceed the City of Norfolk’s noise ordinance.

Pile driving will be done Monday through Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through early Spring 2014.

Work is expected to begin Thursday.  It hasn't started yet because the ground is too wet, ERT spokeswoman Leila Rice told WVEC.com
