NORFOLK-- Edward Aldotson's quiet Norfolk neighborhood was the scene of bumper to bumper traffic last weekend.

Ongoing construction work on Tidewater Drive closed the Roland Park overpass in both directions last weekend.

Some Drivers ended up ditching the detour on Norview Avenue to cut through surrounding neighborhoods including Aldotson’s Sedgefield Drive.

"I came out to get the morning paper and there was traffic going right and traffic going left and they were congested up at the stop sign," said Aldotson.

The repair work on the overpass is just one of several multi-million dollar projects to ease the flow of traffic on tidewater drive.

"It is a huge project, but once it's complete, it's going to improve the traffic flow in that area tremendously," said Lori Crouch, spokeswoman for the City of Norfolk.

The city says they're taking the neighbors complaints seriously and have created the following new detours:

Northbound Tidewater Drive Detours:

-Lafayette Boulevard to Chesapeake Boulevard to Little Creek Road
-Cromwell Road to Chesapeake Boulevard to Little Creek Road

 Southbound Tidewater Drive Detours:

-Widgeon Road to Sewell’s Point Road to Chesapeake Boulevard to Lafayette Boulevard-Philpotts Road to Sewells Point Road to Chesapeake Boulevard to Lafayette Boulevard

The closures will continue this weekend and end next weekend.
