Norfolk launches new initiative to improve schools

NORFOLK -- Norfolk is taking new steps to improve its schools.

Interim Superintendent Michael Spencer announced details of Support Norfolk Public Schools and created a Website for businesses and groups to sign up to adopt schools, tutor, be mentors and other activities.

10 public schools are not fully accredited and that's one of three areas that the Achieveable Results efforts will focus on, officials said.

The district's Achievable Results program also will concentrate on raising ontime graduation rates and getting greater community involvement.

To that end, Wednesday is Principal for the Day day. Business and community leaders will go inside to get a first-hand look at the schools. Among those takig part is City Manager Marcus Jones, who will spend time with Kevin Monroe, the principal of Booker T. Washington High School.
