NORFOLK--In an effort to crack down on late-night partying and vandalism, Norfolk residents of all ages could be forced to follow a new curfew at the beach.

Council members are considering imposing a curfew at Ocean View and Sarah Constant beaches.

“Some people are coming and raising hell, and some of the beaches are close to private residents,” council member Barclay Winn said.

Greater Pinewell Civic League secretary Liz Burns said residents also found rocks along the beach area that had been spray painted with large-print curse words.

At a recent Ocean View task force meeting, residents expressed concerns about people on the beach late at night building fires, drinking, shouting and fighting.

The noise is waking up some families who live nearby.

“There is not an easy solution. We are studying how to best address the problem,” said Winn.

One idea is closing the beaches from 2 a.m. to 5 a.m. “The curfew would be for everyone, not just teenagers,” Winn remarked.

Virginia Beach has a curfew for people under 18 years old, but adults are allowed on the beach at night.
