VIRGINIA BEACH-Carrier Air Wing Eight gets a new leader Friday.

Capt. Daniel L. Cheever will relieve Capt. Daniel W. Dwyer in a change of command ceremony at NAS Oceana.

Dwyer, a pilot, has commanded CVW-8 since May, 2012. His next assignment will be to CVW 17 at NAS Lemoore, CA as air wing commander followed by a follow-on assignment as Director of Aviation Assignments.

Cheever has been serving as CVW 8’s deputy commander. Also a Navy pilot, Cheever has experience in the F/A-18C/D/E/F Hornet and Super Hornet aircraft.

As CVW 8 commander Cheever will be responsible for the combat readiness and operational employment of eight assigned squadrons with 72 aircraft including F/A-18C Hornets, F/A-18E/F Super Hornets, E-2C Hawkeyes, EA-6B Prowlers, MH-60R/S Sea Knights, and more than 2,000 officer and enlisted personnel. They are assigned to USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77).
