NORFOLK - For the last five years, the folks at St. Mary's Home have planned and built and waited for this day to come.
The Albero House officially opened Thursday for the long-term care of people age 21 and older with severe disabilities. Until now, they would have had to move out and find other places to live.
22-year-old Josh Daff is one of 12 people living in there. He transitioned to Albero House from St. Mary's, where he'd lived for the last nine years.
"He would have had to go to a nursing home. And we were hard pressed to find one. I cannot care for Josh like the care he gets from the staff here at St Mary's Home," said his mother Nancy Stockner, who lives in Harrisonburg.
Josh's room was decorated with a surfer, nautical flavor by Maersk Corporation.
St Mary's Home on Kempsville Circle houses 86 residents. Now as they grow older, there's new potential for them to remain at the facility.
