NORFOLK -- The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia gratefully accepted 11 frozen turkeys and baskets with all the trimmings from the Norfolk Sheriff's Office to help feed families in need on Thanksgiving.

Foodbank representative Karen Joyner picked them up Friday as the sheriff's office's annual Thanksgiving basket distribution got underway.

Thanks to donations from sheriff's office employees and Norfolk businessman Matt Hales, 100 families will have a proper Thanksgiving dinner. The food will be distributed through the Foodbank, senior centers, shelters. Some Norfolk residents even got baskets delivered by deputies.

It’s the department’s way of giving back to the Norfolk community to ensure the families have a meal to sit down to on Thanksgiving Day, said spokeswoman Paula Miller.
