8/25 11:15 a.m. UPDATE: The rider of the moped is currently in stable condition.
Investigation reveals that the rider fell asleep while operating his moped. He's been charged with Failure to Maintain Proper Control, Reckless Driving, police said.

NORFOLK-- Police investigated a single-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon that left one person injured near Lake Taylor.

Just before 2:00 p.m. officers and Fire Rescue crews responded to reports of a moped crash in the 1300 block of Kempsville Road.

One person , an adult male, was transported  with serious injuries to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Police say he was alert and breathing and was the only person on the moped.

Preliminary reports indicate that he was driving north on Kempsville Road when the moped struck a guardrail.

The crash is still under investigation.
