NORFOLK -- Authorities say they recovered a loaded gun and ammo from a Virginia Beach man checking in for a flight at Norfolk International Airport.

He was stopped Thursday morning when TSA officers at the checkpoint X-ray machine spotted the .380 caliber Ruger LCP hand gun in the man’s carry-on baggage. It was loaded with six rounds and one chambered, said TSA spokesman Jim McKinney.

Airport police confiscated the gun and ammunition and the man was able to catch his flight to Indianapolis.

The man, whose name hasn't been released, is charged with carrying a concealed weapon on airport property, McKinney stressed.

"Pack your firearm in a locked case.  Your ammunition should be separate, in its original containers preferred and separate, and you need to declare that weapon to the carrier," said TSA official Jeffrey Horowitz.
