NORFOLK -- Ground was broken Thursday for Norfolk's new Main Library.

The Colonel Samuel L. Slover Memorial Library will be a combination of historic and contemporary architecture, combining the old Seaboard building and new construction to create an impressive structure.

The Seaboard will get a complete renovation while a new structure will link it to the Seldon Arcade.

"We're unbelievably excited about this one because there's a confluence of very caring people here in Norfolk," said Herb Newman of Newman Architects.

The $65 million project is the result of a $40 million donation from the Batten family.
Hampton Roads citizens raised an additional $4 million, and the city added $20 to complete the funding.

It will be a state of the art library blending history with modern technology.

"We are getting something called a digital creativity lab where you can work with all sorts of projects with equipment that you may not have at home it may be a little bit more costly," said David Sullivan, Norfolk's director of technology.

Construction is scheduled to start in the summer and the library should open late 2014.
