NORFOLK-A man swerved to avoid an animal in the road and ended up in the water Friday morning.

Authorities were working to recover the car, which is upside down, from the water in the Colonial Place neighborhood.

The driver was able to escape and get to shore at Mayflower Road and Massachusetts Avenue.

"He had a few minor injuries, so we got him to the hospital," said Battalion Chief Julian Williamson.

The Norfolk Dive Team checked to make sure no one else was in the vehicle, even though the driver said he was alone. The vehicle was empty, so now work will begin to get the vehicle out of Knitting Mill Creek, an inlet of the Lafayette River.

No charges were expected to filed.
