NORFOLK -- Traffic heading to the world's largest naval base was nearly at a standstill Thursday morning.

It wasn't the usual morning rush. A vehicle hit a 40-foot power pole in the 7900 block of Hampton Blvd., in front of Sewells Point Elementary School, just after 6 a.m. The pole broke, sending power lines onto the road.  Dominion Power reports there are no outages.

Until repairs are made, northbound Hampton Blvd. is closed at Terminal Blvd. and police are on the scene directing traffic. One lane southbound is also closed.

Authorities say the car that hit the pole didn't stop.

Elizabeth Mather with Norfolk Public Schools says the situation could delay buses transporting children to Blair Middle School from Ben Morrell Housing and Armed Forces Staff College. It could also affect Sewells Point Elementary, depending upon how long the issue lasts. Transportation supervisors are en route to assess the situation, she noted.
