NORFOLK- As warm weather arrives and students are getting out of school, blood donations drop. But the need for donations never goes down.

Giving blood doesn't take long and all blood types are needed.

If you have an hour or two, consider platelet donations. Since platelets have a shelf-life of just five days, it is imperative that there are enough platelets on hand to meet the needs of hospital patients.  You'll be helping people with weakened immune systems who are undergoing chemotherapy or an organ transplant.

You can help prevent a summer shortage by making an appointment to give blood today. You can call 1-800-REDCROSS or go check the Red Cross Hampton Roads Website for blood drives near you.

The Red Cross is celebrating 132 years of service.
