NORFOLK (AP) -- Amtrak is adding more seats for its inaugural Norfolk run that begins next month.
The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation says it has gotten Amtrak to add four cars to the first run of its new Norfolk train service Dec. 12. That's an extra 280 seats.
Officials on Friday said $19 fares are being offered for tickets between Norfolk and Washington, D.C., and cities in between through Dec. 30. Travel must be booked by Dec. 17
“It is encouraging to see such strong support for the new Norfolk service and we are pleased to offer additional capacity on the first day of operation,” said Amtrak President and CEO Joseph Boardman.
The rail line will connect Norfolk with Richmond, which will allow passengers to travel to Washington and as far north as Boston. The round-trip train will bring intercity passenger rail service to Norfolk for the first time since 1977.
The new route is expected to reduce congestion on traffic-filled interstates. The Norfolk station will be at Harbor Park in downtown Norfolk.
