NORFOLK - The attorney for a Norfolk pastor says his client has admitted he has a problem with child pornography.

35-year-old David William Smith was arraigned Thursday after his arrest yesterday on 10 charges of possession of child porn.

His attorney, Howard Copeland, spoke after the hearing.  He's a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where Smith is a pastor.

"He has an issue with that and it needs help," he said.

A statement on the church's Website says the church and school "were stunned" by the charges and that he "has been placed on leave pending the investigation and is not allowed to come onto campus."

Smith is due in court for a bond hearing on April 1 and has a preliminary hearing on May 7.

CHURCH STATEMENT:
"Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church and School and the Lutheran Church-Missour Synod were stunned to learn that Trinity's pastor, Rev. David Smith, was charged with ten counts of possession of child pornography.

The church will cooperate completely with authorities and their ongoing investigation. Pastor Smith has been placed on leave pending the investigation and is not allowed to come onto campus.

Our prayers are with Pastor Smith and his family.  During this time of Holy Week, we are reminded of the sacrifice that Christ paid for our sins.  It is only through Christ that we are saved from ourselves and the evil that persistently assaults us.

Classes and worship services will continue as scheduled."
