NORFOLK-Old Dominion University says six students were robbed early Monday on campus.

A campus alert said the students were walking at Powhatan Avenue near the LR Hill sports complex around 1:00 a.m. when four men, one with a gun, robbed them of their wallets and iPhones.

Officials said the students weren't hurt and the robbers ran off towards campus.

There were few details about the suspects in the alert other than the four are black and two had their hair in dreadlocks.

The Old Dominion University Police Department has increased patrols in the areas bordering the campus.

The alert also reminded students about things they can do to stay safe -- use the university shuttle and Saferide service, don't drink too much because it can impair your awareness, try not to carry cash and other valuables and activate the tracking software on iPhones and other smartphones.

Anyone with information about this robbery or any other crime against ODU, contact University Police at 683-4000.

The incident got people talking on the WVEC13 Facebook page.

Deb Wassel said, "OD is going to lose students if things don't change in that area. How has it gotten so bad with all the crime? Students should feel safe walking around their campus. Virginia is going to get a bad rep for not being a safe state for students to come to school."

Nancy Gray gave her perspective.

"When I worked late nights in Ghent, ODU students would be out walking at crazy hours of night....it is a huge risk. Eliminate some of the risk stay home."

Kristie Mathison Bergmann added, "College students shouldn't fear getting robbed at gun point around their school to begin with. When I was that age, 1:00 a.m. wasn't 'crazy hours of the night' either."
