NORFOLK -- 20 small dogs and puppies from the Mississippi flood zone are coming to Norfolk.
The Norfolk SPCA, which belongs to the Humane Society's Emergency Services Placement program, is getting the canines from the Natchez Adams County Humane Society.
The devastating flooding of the Mississippi River has forced people to give up their pets.
The Humane Society of the United States is transporting 84 dogs to the Washington, DC area and the SPCA will meet up with HSUS in Maryland to bring the animals back.
Other shelters receiving animals include Richmond SPCA, Washington Animal Rescue League, Lost Dog and Cat Rescue, and the Humane Society of Harrisburg Area.
The dogs are expected to be available for adoption around June 3, and SPCA officials hope people instead in getting a new pet will adopt an animal already at the shelter to help make room for the new arrivals.
The SPCA is at 916 Ballentine Blvd.
