NORFOLK -- Two people were able to escape a house fire after being alerted by a smoke detector.
Norfolk Fire Rescue responded to a call about a structure fire around 10:45 p.m. on Friday night.
Crews arrived to the scene at 10:48 p.m. in the 500 block of Suburban Parkway. According to a press release, smoke and flames could be seen coming from the rear left side of the home.
Two occupants were able to get out after being alerted by a smoke detector. They were not injured.
Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the rear of the single story residence.
The home sustained heavy fire and smoke damage.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
