NEWPORT NEWS-A man with a gun barged into a Newport News home, demanding money and weapons from the couple living there. In the process, the robber shot their dog.

The home invasion happened Friday, July 26, in the 800 block of Alta Crescent.

Police say a 71-year-old man had gone through his garage to take out the trash. He went back inside but didn't close the garage door and that's when the gunman spotted his chance.

He demanded money and weapons from the man and his 66-year-old wife. Their dog came out out a bedroom and the suspect shot it in the leg.

Police say the robber didn't get any money, but he stole a gun and then left.

Detectives say this was a crime of opportunity.

The couple, who have health problems, wasn't hurt.
