NEWPORT NEWS (AP) -- A Newport News woman who collected her late grandmother's Social Security benefits will spend six months in prison.
48-year-old Yvette A. Disnew had pleaded guilty in May to theft of government monies. The Virginian-Pilot reports that Disnew was sentenced Monday in U.S. District Court.
According to court documents, Disnew collected more than $152,000 from the Social Security Administration after her 87-year-old grandmother, Carrie Lee Mason, died in 1999. The scheme was discovered in 2012.
Yvette had worked with Hampton City Schools since 1996. As of this morning, she is no longer employed by HCS, spokewoman Diana Gulotta told 13News Now.
