NEWPORT NEWS-- Police have identified the driver who was wounded following an attempted traffic stop as 40-year-old Corey Antonia Moody.

An officer was also wounded, but Newport News police now say they are not sure if the officer was shot.

The officer was treated and released from Riverside Regional Medical Center; Moody was also injured and taken to the hospital for treatment.

Authorities say the officer and his partner pulled over a BMW in a traffic stop about 7:00 p.m. at the 35th Street ramp onto I-664 and at some point shots were fired.

During the altercation the driver of the BMW drove off and detectives chased him to the 700 block of 35th Street.

Additional detectives arrived and the driver was removed from the car and was found to have gunshot wounds to leg and back.

The 29-year-old officer has been with the department for four years.  He is a member of the organized crime office and police say the officer was wearing plain clothes and driving an unmarked car.

It's not clear whether the shooting was related to organized crime or who fired the first shot.

Chief James Fox spent most of the evening at the scene and stressed the importance of the safety of the department's officers.

There will be two investigations - a criminal one focused on the shooting and an internal police investigation on the officers' response.

Detectives have also learned that the Drug Enforcement Administation has felony warrants outstanding for Moody.

The names of the officers involved have not been released.
