NEWPORT NEWS -- The signs warning against swimming and wading are going up at three beaches in Newport News.

Bacteria levels are too high in the water off King Lincoln Park Beach, Huntington Park Beach, and Hilton Beach, health department officials said Thursday.

Samples of the water will be collected and checked to see if levels are safe. Until then, the signs will remain up.

Health officials say people swimming or playing in waters with bacteria levels higher than the standard have an increased risk of developing gastrointestinal illness.

Signs were up at the some of the beaches last week.
