NEWPORT NEWS -- A 60-year-old man was charged with reckless driving after his SUV slammed into an apartment building in Newport News.

The crash broke a gas line, forcing residents of Pinedale Manor off Adams Drive to be evacuated.

Va. Natural Gas was making repairs Wednesday evening.

Police spokeswoman Holly McPherson said the Nissan Pathfinder was traveling down Adams Drive about 4:30 p.m.   She says that Reginald Whitehead, Sr. lost control on the curve near Antrim Drive and slammed into the building.

Whitehead, who lives in Newport News, wasn't hurt. He was issued a summons for reckless driving, McPherson told WVEC.com.
