NEWPORT NEWS-- The School Board Tuesday night left intact it's dental plan for retired employees. The board decided not to take it out of the budget after hearing community input.

Retired Newport News teachers breathed a sigh of relief after learning they will not lose their dental benefits because of proposed budget cuts.

The idea was first proposed as the school board struggles to overcome a $12.4 million budget gap.

Officials believed the move would save $600,000 for the school system.

The cut would have affected 1,097 retirees who are 65 years old or above.  That group could add anywhere from $300 to $900 a year to their health care costs.
