UPDATE: Jan. 9th, 11p.m. Police arrested 24-year-old Taisha Nicole Peterson on charges of robbery, use of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and entering a bank while armed.
The second woman in the car is not being charged as investigators have determined that she was unaware of what occurred
NEWPORT NEWS -- Police were investigating a bank robbery Thursday afternoon.
Officials said the robbery took place at the Old Point National Bank at Jefferson Avenue and Thimble Shoals Boulevard around 4:48 pm.
According to witnesses, a female entered the bank, approached a teller, displayed a hand gun and demanded cash.
The teller gave the suspect an undisclosed amount of cash.
The suspect then left the bank by car. A witness was able to get the license number of the car dispatchers provided a description to patrol officers.
Officers in the area of the bank saw the car and made a traffic stop near Jefferson Avenue and Middle Ground Boulevard.
Officers detained two women and a short time later the robbery suspect was positively identified. Police also found three small children in the car.
Both women were taken to Police Headquarters to be interviewed. The children were placed in the care of relatives.
