NEWPORT NEWS-A Newport News man faces drug charges after police say they found narcotics, cash and a gun in the motel room where he had his nine-year-old son.
29-year-old Edward Lee Taliaferro III was in the Extended Stay America on November 9 when police responded to 911 calls, said police spokesman Lou Thurston.
"As officers approached the room where the calls had originated, they smelled the odor of marijuana. When the officers knocked on the door it was opened by (his girlfriend and the child's mother) and the officers noticed the child lying on the bed," Thurston said.
Police believe Taliaferro was in the bathroom trying to flush evidence of drugs.
Officers recovered a significant amount of cash as well as illegal narcotics and found a gun in the bedside table, Thurston added.
Taliaferro, who lives in Hampton, is charged with one count each of possession with intent to distribute heroin, possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana, obstruction of justice, possession of a firearm while in possession of illegal narcotics, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and child neglect.
